Marty Napper, BD'73, Named Mercy Academy Educator of the Year

Bishop David 1973 grad and former Holy Cross faculty member, Marty Napper, was named as the 2010 Mercy Academy Educator of the Year. Mercy presents this award each year to an individual who has been a leader in Catholic education in Jefferson County, an innovative person, a scholar in their own right and one who cares deeply for young people.
Marty has been married to Diane for 34 years and has one son, Blake (HC'2002). He attended St. Denis elementary school and Bishop David High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history from Bellarmine University and his MEd. from the University of Louisville. He has been in education for 33 years: St. Vincent DePaul , 1977-1978; Mercy Academy, 1979-1985; Presentation, 1985-1986; Holy Cross, 1986-2003; Mercy Academy, 2003-present. In his tenure in education he has taught math, social studies, reading, religion, American history, World History, English, reading and study skills, advanced placement American history, geography, law, psychology, political science, sociology, current events, AP early American History and ACCP American History. Marty has taught at the Governor’s Scholars Program for six years.
Activities include coaching volleyball, basketball and softball at the elementary level; freshman and JV volleyball for three years; at Mercy he served as varsity volleyball for two years with two regional championships and two, third place finishes in the state tournament; while at Presentation, he served as athletic director for two years, head coach for volleyball for two years, Booster Club Faculty representative, worked on various retreats and organized and worked summer volleyball camps; at Holy Cross, he coached varsity baseball for six years with one district title and four district runners-up titles, coached freshman and JV volleyball for two years, served as assistant athletic director for nine years, was the co-founder of the LIVT volleyball tournament, head volleyball coach for five years, Dean of Students for two years, ran the school apparel store for three years and was department chairperson for three years.
Awards/Accomplishments include nomination and acknowledgement as an AMGEN Teacher of Excellence honorable mention; selection to travel to Washington D.C. by the Jewish Community Center to visit the Holocaust Museum with 30 other teachers throughout the State of Kentucky, Walmart Teacher of the Year, Aegon Teacher of Excellence Award, Ashland Oil Golden Apple Award, Governor’s Scholar Impact Teacher Certificate.
Marty has received numerous achievements in his 33 years of service. In his own words “ He is a teacher.” He has influenced countless lives by his dedication and perseverance despite adversity. Marty has done Governor’s Scholars each summer for many years, is a dedicated teacher, self-sacrificing for the good of his students, professional at all times and strives to meet the need of all students in his classes. Marty has taught for so many years and has given so much time and talent to the Catholic school system. He continues to teach because it is so important to him. He has shown true dedication.
