| | NewsLots of Fun at the Alumni Softball Tournament Congratulations to the winners of the 5th Annual Alumni Softball Tournament held on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at Holy Cross High School. Winning team members were: Amy Liford Decker HC'02, Allison Epley HC'04, Adam Engler HC'06, Jason Epley and Jeremy Savage both HC'98, and from the HC Class of 2000, Jeff Epley, Travis Metzger, Curt Williams, Justin Brown, Jeremy Holland and Ryan Schuler. Eight teams participated in the all day tournament which was a fundraiser for the Holy Cross Boys' Basketball Team. Thanks to all those who participated and to all those who just came to watch the festivities! The Alumni Softball Tournament is always a huge success!! Alums Sweat it Out on the Hockey Field Once again this year Alums returned to play in the Annual Alumni Field Hockey Game. Early in the evening the Alumni team played against the current Cougar team which was great experience for this very young Cougar team (Click Here For 2010-11 Schedule). To end the evening the Alums divided into two teams and had an All Alumni Game. Alumni Soccer Game Held August 1st On Sunday, August 1st, Alums returned to Holy Cross for the annual alumni soccer game to help support the Holy Cross Soccer program. The Alumni players ranged from the Bishop David Class of 1984 to our most recent Alums, the Holy Cross Class of 2010! Despite the extreme August heat, the Alums put on an impressive show, and had a geat time! Click article title for pictures.
Over 100 Young Men Attend the Dean Wells (HC'88) Free Football Camp On Thursday, July 15th, nearly 100 young men attended the Dean Wells Free Football Camp at Holy Cross High School. Dean is a 1988 graduate of Holy Cross High School. He attended the University of Kentucky where he was selected Captain of the Football Team as a seniorand set school records for sacks. Perhaps more importantly, he was the second player in UK football history to become a 4-time member of the SEC All Academic Team. Dean went on to enjoy 9 great seasons in the NFL where he totaled more than 500 tackles as a Line-backer for the Seattl Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers. Holy Cross was proud to partner with Dean and host this first class camp! Greg Nord, BD'74, Returns to Coach at the University of Kentucky   Greg Nord, a Bishop David 1974 graduate, has returned to help coach the University of Kentucky Football Team. Greg, who played for the Wildcats in the mid-1970's, was named tight ends and special teams coach on Tuesday, July 13th. Nord spent 15 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisville under Ron Cooper, John L. Smith, Bobby Petrino, and Steve Kragthorpe. He was set to be the tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Illinois, but the lure of U.K. and coach Phillips made it easy to walk away from that job during the summer. Alums Enjoy Summer Fun at the Holy Cross PicnicOn Friday and Saturday, June 25 & 26, Holy Cross High School held its 2nd annual "Summer Picnic". Since bad weather seemed to plague the "Mayfest", Holy Cross took advantage of a summer weekend date that opened up due to the merger of several local church picnics in the area. This is the second year with the summer date, and all indications are that this will become the permanent date. Thanks to all of the families, neighbors, friends, and alums who joined us for some summer fun! Click on article title for pictures. Kim Mingus, Daughter of Alums, Featured in New C.J. "Q-Up" Section Kimberly Mingus, the daughter of Bruce Mingus (BD'82) and Karen Shaw (AM'82), was featured in the new "Q-up" section of the Courier Journal on June 29. Angela Merici Class of 1965 Celebrates 45 YearsOn Saturday, June 26, the Angela Merici Class of 1965 held their 45 year reunion at Churchill Downs. Over 70 ladies enjoyed a day of re-acquainting, reminiscing, and RACING! The members of the reunion committee chipped in and had a race sponsored that day. The 5th Race was called the Angela Merici Class of 65 Classic. The committee members were able to go to the winners circle and present the trophy. On a day like this--everyone goes home a winner!! Marty Napper, BD'73, Named Mercy Academy Educator of the Year Bishop David 1973 grad and former Holy Cross faculty member, Marty Napper, was named as the 2010 Mercy Academy Educator of the Year. Mercy presents this award each year to an individual who has been a leader in Catholic education in Jefferson County, an innovative person, a scholar in their own right and one who cares deeply for young people. Brad Vance, HC2007, Helps USI win NCAA Div. II Baseball Championship Congratulations to Holy Cross 2007 Graduate, Brad Vance, and the rest of his University of Southern Indiana Baseball team on their 2010 NCAA Division II National Championship title. Brad was named Most Valuable Player in the Division II Baseball Midwest Regional Tournament and was also named to the National All Tournament Team during the NCAA Division II World Series. Derby Dreams Come True for Two Holy Cross Alums On the first Saturday in May, two Holy Cross Alums looked on as their horse ran in the 136th running of the Kentucky Derby! 1989 Grad Keith Myrick and 1988 Grad Jeff Wathen were two of 24 owners of Noble's Promise who finished an impressive 5th place in the Kentucky Derby! AM'73 Grad, Kathy Mathison Neuner, Up for Woman of the Year AM 1973 Alum, Kathy Mathison Neuner, has been asked to be a candidate for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Woman of the Year. Each year, in communities across the country, dynamic, passionate candidates engage in a spirited competition to earn The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year" titles by raising funds for blood cancer survivors. Candidates are goal-oriented and compassionate. Their relentless efforts are focused on making life better for hundreds of thousands of patients battling blood cancers: leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. AM 1973 Alum Earns Promotion Congratulations to Debbie Linnig Michals, a 1973 graduate of Angela Merici, for being named special projects investigator at the Jefferson County Property Valuation Administration. After graduating from high school, Debbie earned her Bachelor's of Science Degree from Western Kentucky University. She was previously the Executive Director of OSHA Review Commission; director of communications, Jefferson Circuit Court Clerks Office. Good Luck with this new endeavor!
Australian Adventure for 2006 Grad, Eric Floyd Eric "Sleepy" Floyd, a 2006 graduate of Holy Cross, arrived in Australia in February 2010 to embark on a new adventure. Bob Haire, BD'71, Wins WHAS-TV Excel AwardCongratulations to Bishop David 1971 Graduate Bob Haire for being the winner of the February 24, 2010 WHAS-TV e.ON U.S. Excel Award for his enthusiasm and dedication as a U.S. History teacher at Fern Creek High School. Click article title to view entire story. Big Honor for HC'87 Grad Paul FultzCongratulations to Paul Fultz, a 1987 graduate of Holy Cross High School. Global accounting and tax giant KPMG LLP has named Paul, a veteran executive, to lead its local operation. Paul received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Louisville and has spent his entire career in KPMG's Louisville Office. Those faculty members who knew Paul during his high school years at Holy Cross are not surprised by his success. Paul is married to Jennifer Peterson, who is also a 1987 Holy Cross graduate. These inductees were chosen for their outstanding accomplishments and overwhelming support of Holy Cross. The evening included a reception and dinner followed by the Induction Ceremony presented by Brad Knoop HC'90, Media Projects Manager, University of Louisville. It's Never Too Late to Celebrate a Reunion for the Class of '87The Holy Cross Class of 1987 held their "22" year reunion on Saturday August 29th in the Holy Cross cafeteria. Since the class failed to get together their 20th, they decided better late than never!! Almost 50 alums showed up at Holy Cross to visit with old friends and reminisce about the good times!!
